K K Metal Corporation is situated right in the middle of Gujari Bazar on Navanaka Road. This is a very old part of the city and it shows. It’s always noisy here with the sound of metal clanging and trucks backing up into the narrow spaces. We deal with all kinds of metal parts and scraps. Our shop is basically a large, open room filled with stacks of iron and steel that reach almost to the ceiling. There isn't much room to walk around once a new shipment comes in on a Tuesday morning. We’ve been here for years, and while the shop has seen better days, it’s where we do our work. The floor is solid concrete and always has some grease or metal shavings on it. It’s a tough environment to work in, especially when it’s hot outside and the metal starts to radiate heat. We don't wear suits or sit in fancy air-conditioned offices. Most of the day is spent measuring things, weighing metal on the big scales, and loading up customer vehicles. My father used to run this place, and now I handle the daily bits. Navanaka Road is quite narrow, so it can be a real struggle to get the big delivery trucks in and out without blocking the whole street. Everyone in the market knows each other. We help each other out when someone’s equipment breaks down or when we need an extra hand with a heavy load. It’s just honest, hard work. We close up when the sun goes down and the market finally starts to quieten. We don't have a big marketing plan. We just open the shutters and see who shows up needing metal.
