Cars always seem to break down at the worst possible time, usually when someone is late for a wedding or a meeting. That’s why we stay busy here at Union Batteries on Gokhale Road. We are at 426/1 in Model Colony, which is a nice area but the traffic can be a nightmare. Our shop is mostly stacks of heavy black boxes and that sharp smell of battery acid that never really goes away. It’s a messy job, carrying these heavy things out to people’s cars, but someone has to do it. We deal with all sorts of batteries, not just for cars but for those big inverters people have at home for when the power goes out. When the lights flicker and die, people start calling us. I’ve lived in this part of town for years, so I know most of the faces that walk in. It isn't a fancy office with leather chairs. It’s just a workbench, some tools, and a lot of grease. We don't do much talking except to explain why a battery isn't holding a charge anymore. Sometimes the terminals are just corroded and need a good cleaning. Other times, the whole thing is dead. We just give it to you straight. It's hard work on the back, lifting those units all day, but it keeps the shop going. We’ve been here a while and plan to stay.
