Pragati Engineering Work

Our workshop for Pragati Engineering Work is in Bhosarigoan on Gill Road. It’s a dusty part of the city because of all the construction and the factories nearby. The Namgude area is mostly narrow lanes and small industrial sheds. We are one of those sheds. We have a high tin roof that makes a lot of noise when it rains in the monsoon. Inside, the floor is mostly dark from years of oil spills and metal shavings. We have a lathe machine and some welding equipment that takes up most of the space. There isn't much room for a proper office, so we just have a small desk tucked into the corner near the entrance. We drink a lot of tea to stay focused on the tasks. The neighbors are mostly other mechanics and fabricators, so we all know each other. Sometimes we borrow tools from the shop next door when something breaks. The air is thick with the smell of burnt metal and coolant most afternoons. We keep the main door wide open so the trucks can back in to load up. It’s hard work and the days are long, but we’ve been doing it this way for a long time. We don't have a website or anything like that. People just know our name from being in the village for so long. We just get the jobs finished as they come in.
