Mother Teresa School sits right on Old Mundhwa Road in Vadgaon Sheri. If you know Pune, you know that this area has changed a lot over the years. It used to be much quieter, but now there are shops and apartments everywhere you look. Our school building has been standing here through all those changes. Every morning, the street outside is packed with rickshaws and parents on scooters trying to get through the gate. It’s a bit of a squeeze sometimes. Inside, the hallways are narrow and the sound of children talking echoes off the concrete walls. We have teachers who have been here since they were young, and now they are seeing the children of their former students coming through the doors. The classrooms are basic, with chalkboards and wooden benches that have seen better days, but they serve their purpose. During the breaks, the playground is a sea of blue and white uniforms. There is always someone running or someone losing their water bottle. We don’t have any fancy air conditioning, so we keep the windows open to let the Pune breeze in, even if it brings a bit of dust from the road. It’s just a neighborhood school where we try to keep things moving forward. There is always a lot of grading to do and bells ringing at the wrong time, but that is just how life goes here on Old Mundhwa Road.
