Working out of Nandraj Sankul on the Mumbai Bangalore Highway Road in Sangavi is an experience because of the constant flow of people. At Mamta Varieties & Embroidry, we spend most of our hours surrounded by threads and fabric. The embroidery machines have a very specific clatter that fills the room when we are working on a big order. It’s a lot of sitting and focusing on the small details, making sure the needles are sharp and the colors match what the customer wanted. Outside, the highway is always roaring with trucks, but inside it’s mostly just us and the materials. We carry a lot of general variety items too, because people in Sangavi like having a one-stop place for their small needs. The shop is located on the second floor, so people have to come up the stairs, which keeps it a bit quieter than the street level. We have samples of our work pinned up on the walls so people can see what we do without us having to say much. It gets a bit cramped when a lot of new stock arrives, but we manage to squeeze it all in. Sometimes we stay late when a job needs to be finished, watching the lights on the highway from the window. It’s hard work, but there is something nice about seeing a finished piece of embroidery before it goes out the door.
