About Hastakala Pune Handicrafts – Art & Craft in Pune
We are based at Indrayani Kunj, specifically Sr. No. 49/01 in Shanti Nagar. This is in the Watare Mala area of Mundhwa. Hastakala Pune Handicrafts is just a local workshop where we make things by hand. It’s not a big factory or a polished store. We have a lot of raw materials like clay and wood stored in the back shed. The Mundhwa area has a lot of open space still, which is nice. We work at a slow and steady pace. My brother and I started this after we left our old jobs. We wanted to do something where we could see the results of our labor at the end of the day. It’s often dusty in here because of the sanding and cutting. We don't have a receptionist, so if the phone rings, one of us just wipes our hands and answers it. We make various items that people usually buy for their houses or as gifts. It’s not high-end stuff, just practical things that show the hand-made touch. Sometimes a piece has a little knot in the wood or a slightly uneven edge, but that’s just how it goes when you aren't using big machines. We like it that way. Most of our neighbors in Shanti Nagar drop by just to see what we are working on. We keep the windows open for the breeze, even if it brings in some noise from the street. There's a big mango tree outside that gives us some shade in the summer months. It's home.
