Working at the vineyard in Burkegaon is a lot of physical labor, to be honest. We are located at Gat No. 235, which is part of the Pimpri-Sandas area in Haveli. Deccan Plateau Vineyards Pvt. Ltd. isn't a place where people sit around in suits. We are usually out in the rows of vines checking the leaves or the grapes. The soil out here is a specific kind, and we spend a lot of time making sure the irrigation is working right. Sometimes the pumps break down, and that’s a whole day wasted just trying to fix one pipe. It’s a lot of waiting for the right weather and hoping the rain doesn’t come at the wrong time. The office we have on-site is small and mostly filled with tools, maps of the plots, and old records. We drink a lot of water and try to stay out of the sun when it gets too intense in the afternoons. It’s a bit of a trek for anyone coming from Pune, so we don’t get many random visitors. Most of the people we see are our own workers or the guys delivering supplies. Every year is a bit different depending on how the crop turns out, so you never really know what to expect. We just take it one day at a time and try to keep the plants healthy.
