We are situated in the Mundhwa Cantonment Area. It’s a huge site, and it feels a bit different than the rest of the city because of the military presence nearby. Working at a forge is a very specific kind of experience. It’s incredibly hot near the furnaces, and the noise of the hammers can be heard from quite a distance. We move around in heavy boots and safety gear all day. The scale of the things we make is pretty impressive, though it’s also very exhausting work. There is always a layer of soot on everything, no matter how much we clean. We have big open bays where the metal is shaped and then moved to different sections for finishing. It’s not a quiet or clean environment. Most of us have been working here for years and we’ve gotten used to the heat and the constant vibration of the machinery. The canteen is usually where we catch our breath and talk about things other than work. It’s a big operation, but at the end of the day, it’s just about people working with fire and metal. We don’t have any fancy mission statements on the walls, just safety signs and schedules. We take pride in the fact that the things we forge end up in all sorts of machines all over the place, even if the work itself is gritty and hard.
