About Devi Mahila Gruh Udyog – Art & Craft in Pune
Our place is on Alandi Road, specifically at Survey No. 90. Devi Mahila Gruh Udyog is a space where a bunch of us women come together to work. It is a bit different from the big factories nearby. We handle everything from preparing materials to packing them up. The room is usually full of talk and the sounds of whatever we are making that day. It smells like spices or whatever raw goods we have on the tables. Being on Alandi Road means there is always a lot of activity outside, with people heading to the temple or just passing through. We started small and stayed that way because it works for us. We do not have fancy office chairs or a polished lobby. Most of us sit on stools or mats depending on the task. It is a lot of manual labor, but we take our time to do it right. Sometimes the kids come by after school and wait for us to finish. We share our lunches and talk about our families while we work. It is more like a community than just a job. The building itself is older, and we have had to fix the roof a couple of times. It is not a perfect setup, but it is ours. We just keep our heads down and get the work done, making sure every batch is as good as the last one we finished.
