We operate from Jijamata Niwas in the Dighi area of Pune. It is a simple office where we handle all the registrations and paperwork for people wanting to learn how to drive. The room is small, just enough space for a desk, a couple of chairs, and a metal cupboard for all the files. We have our cars parked out on the street or in a nearby lot. Driving around Pune can be quite a challenge, especially for someone who has never been behind the wheel before. We usually take the students out to the quieter roads in Dighi to get them comfortable with the gears and the steering first. It involves a lot of sitting in the car and repeating the same instructions over and over again. We have to be very patient because everyone learns at a different pace and some get quite nervous. The desk in the office is usually covered with forms and learners' permits that need to be processed. We spend a lot of time explaining the different rules of the road and how the licensing process works. Sometimes the traffic in Pune is so bad that it throws our whole schedule off for the day, but we just manage it as best as we can. Most of the people who come to us are from right here in the neighborhood. It is a very practical job and we spend more time in the cars than we do inside.
