Starting the day at Vasanthi Enterprises means rolling up the heavy iron shutters on Kamaraj Salai every single morning. It’s been that way for a while now. Most folks in Thattanchavady know the spot because it’s right there at No. 127, and usually there’s a bike or two parked out front blocking the way a bit. Inside, it’s mostly just shelves filled with stuff people need for their homes or little projects. It isn’t some fancy air-conditioned showroom where everything is under glass. There’s some dust on the boxes because the road outside is always busy with traffic and construction kicks up a lot of grit. We spend a lot of time just chatting with the regulars who drop by. Sometimes they don't even buy anything, they just want to complain about the heat or the price of petrol these days. Dealing with suppliers can be a headache sometimes, especially when the truck gets stuck in the narrow lanes around here, but we manage. If the lights go out, we just open the back door to get a bit of a breeze going. It’s just a normal workplace where things get done. We don't have a big office or anything like that, just a desk near the front where the accounts are kept in a ledger. Sometimes the phone rings and it’s someone asking for something we sold out of yesterday, so we have to tell them to wait for the next delivery. That’s just how it goes here.
