Nitesh Sewing Machine is right where the traffic usually gathers, so there’s always the sound of horns mixing with the clicking of the machines. We spend our time oiling gears and making sure the needles are straight. People bring us machines that belonged to their grandmothers, covered in dust and rusted shut. It’s satisfying to see those old heavy metal things start moving again after a good cleaning. The shop isn't very large, so we have to stack the boxes pretty high. Sometimes we trip over a pedal or a power cord, but we’re used to the clutter. We don't use any fancy computers to figure out what's wrong; we just listen to the sound the motor makes. You can tell a lot about a sewing machine just by how it hums. We usually have a cup of tea sitting on the counter, though it often gets cold before we get a chance to drink it. The sun hits the front of the shop in the late afternoon, making it a bit stuffy, but we just keep at it. Customers usually wait around and chat while we do small adjustments. It’s a steady pace of work. We aren't trying to change the world, just keeping the clothes in this town mended and the tailors happy with their tools. It is a long day but we like it.
