At Gehlot Watch Company, it is mostly quiet except for the sound of all the different clocks ticking at the same time. We are located at number 24 in the Mehta Market area of Sojat City and it is a place where people bring things that are broken. My desk is covered with very tiny screws and small magnifying glasses because my eyes are not as good as they used to be years ago. I spend a lot of time sitting on a small stool fixing straps or putting new batteries into old watches that people have owned for decades. The market outside is always moving fast but inside here everything feels slower. Some customers come in just to ask the time or to see if their grandfather’s old pocket watch can still be saved. We have some new watches in the glass cases too but they mostly just sit there catching the light. The walls are lined with clocks that I have to wind up regularly so they do not stop. Sometimes the smell of the machine oil is quite strong in the morning when I first open the door. Mehta Market is a crowded place with a lot of shops squeezed together so you have to look closely to find us. I like the work because it requires patience and steady hands which is how I have always done things here.
