Working out of Lane 12/2 in Chouhan Banger is pretty intense sometimes. This part of New Seelampur, specifically C-44/15, is always moving. You can hear the sounds of cloth being moved and people shouting across the street from morning till night. We deal with textiles, so the place is usually full of dust and little bits of thread that get on everything you wear. There’s no point in wearing nice clothes to work here. Most of our day is spent measuring things out, checking the rolls for any holes or weird stains, and then wrapping them up for the next person to take away. It’s cramped in the office, especially when we get a big shipment in and there is nowhere to walk. We usually have the radio playing in the background, something to keep the mood up while we’re doing the repetitive stuff. The tea guy comes by twice a day and that’s usually the highlight because we get to stop for ten minutes. It’s a family-run kind of vibe, even if we aren’t all related. We argue about where the scissors went or who forgot to lock the side gate, but it all gets sorted by the time we head home. It is a lot of physical work, lifting heavy rolls and moving furniture to make space, but we are used to it. We just keep going.
