About Mohd Mustak Painter – Art & Craft in North Delhi
I set up my base near Subhash Chowk on the Bakoli Main Road. My name is Mohd Mustak and I spend most of my time painting whatever needs a new coat. Being right on the main road means I see a lot of people passing by every day. I’ve lived in this area for a long time, so I know the houses and the types of walls we have here. Most of my gear is kept in a small shed near the chowk. I don't have a team of people, maybe just a helper or two when the building is tall. I do a lot of whitewashing and distemper work. People around Bakoli usually call me when the festive season is coming up or if they’ve had some water damage. I’m not one for fancy talk; I just look at the wall, tell you what it needs, and get to work. I’ve learned that you can’t rush the drying time, no matter how much the owner wants it done. I use my old cycle to carry my tins and brushes to the site. It’s a simple way to get around the traffic at Subhash Chowk. The dust from the main road can be a problem for the wet paint, so I have to be careful about when I start. I’ve been doing this since I was a young man and my hands are always stained with some color or another. It’s a decent way to make a living and keep busy.
