Being located at 232 Jama Masjid New Market in Meena Bazar means we are right in the thick of things. Delhi Centre Tools Store is surrounded by the constant noise of the crowd and the calls of other shopkeepers. Our shop is small, and every inch of wall space is covered with tools and hardware. We don't have any bright lights or modern displays like you see in the new parts of the city. It’s just a practical place where people come to find what they need for their repairs or projects. We’ve been here long enough that we don’t need a big sign for people to know who we are. The air is always a bit dusty, and it gets quite cramped when more than two people are inside at once. We spend our days pulling boxes down from high shelves and helping people find specific bits and pieces. It’s a lot of standing around and talking. We don't follow any corporate rules here. We just treat people fairly and try to keep the stock replenished. Sometimes the delivery trucks can't get through the narrow lanes, so we have to carry things by hand. It’s hard work, especially when the weather is bad, but it’s just the way things are in the old market. We aren't trying to be the biggest store, just a reliable one that stays open and does its job day after day. It is a long day but we enjoy it.
