The streets are narrow, the rickshaws are everywhere, and there is always a crowd. Our shop has been around for a long time, passed down through the family. It’s a small space, but we pack it full of whatever it is we’re trading that week. Usually, it’s hardware and related items. We don't have a showroom. Most of our stock is tucked away in corners or up on high shelves that we need a ladder to reach. It’s the kind of place where we know our customers by name because their fathers probably bought from our fathers. We sit on the floor or on small stools, drinking chai and talking to whoever walks in. There’s no air conditioning, just the old ceiling fans that have been spinning for decades. It gets loud with the noise from the Chowk right outside, but we’re used to it. We don't do things the modern way with fancy websites or apps. We use a pen and a ledger mostly. It’s just how we have always done things here in the heart of the old city. It’s a bit cramped and old-fashioned, but it works for us. We start the day early to beat the worst of the heat and keep going until the market shuts down.
