Ratnam High School is tucked away on 2nd Line in Nellore. If you know the 524001 area, you know it’s pretty cramped and busy. Our school fits right in there. We’ve got a couple of floors and the stairs are a bit narrow, so it gets crowded when classes change. It’s a typical Nellore school—hot in the afternoons and a bit noisy because of the shops nearby. We don’t have a massive campus with a stadium or anything. Instead, we use every bit of space we have for the classrooms. The teachers have their own little room where they keep their lunch boxes and piles of grading. Sometimes the power goes out and we just have to open the windows wider. The building has been here for years, and you can tell by the way the paint has faded in certain spots. It’s a no-nonsense kind of place. We spend our time making sure the kids actually show up and do their homework. The office handles all the admissions and the fees, and there’s always someone waiting on the wooden bench outside to talk to the principal. It’s a local school for local families. We don’t use fancy gadgets much, just blackboards and textbooks. It’s honest work, and at the end of the day, we’re just glad to see the kids heading home safely through the Nellore streets.
