About Vishwa Die & Tools – Metals & Minerals in Mumbai
Vishwa Die & Tools is tucked away in Malad West, specifically on Taboot Street. We are inside the Lavji Nanji Compound, which is right behind the old Bombay Theatre. Most people use the theatre as a landmark because the street itself can be easy to miss if you aren't looking for it. The compound has been around for a long time and has that worn-in look that only comes with years of heavy work. We spend our days working on dies and various tools, and the shop is usually filled with the sound of metal hitting metal or the hum of the cooling fans. It’s not the kind of place where you’d wear your best clothes. There’s grease on the door handles and metal shavings on the floor, no matter how much we sweep. We have a small crew and we all know each other well. Most of the work is repetitive but it requires a lot of focus so we don't talk much while the machines are running. During lunch, we usually sit outside the compound for a bit of fresh air, though even then you can hear the traffic from the main road. The area has changed a lot, and the theatre doesn't show the same kinds of films it used to, but our shop stays pretty much the same. We have our regulars who know where to find us and they don't mind the clutter or the noise. It’s just a solid, local workspace.
