If you find yourself walking down Dadyseth 1st Cross Road, you'll see us tucked into Bhagirathi Bhavan at 1A. It’s a cozy corner of Babulnath. The First Step School is where we spend our mornings and afternoons. It’s not a huge place, just a few rooms where the little ones gather. Usually, the street is pretty quiet until the parents start dropping off their kids. We’ve got desks and chairs that have been around for a bit, and the walls are covered in whatever the kids made last week. It’s a bit messy sometimes. You can hear the sounds of the neighborhood filtering in through the windows—the occasional car horn or someone shouting down the street. We don’t have a big fancy playground, but we make do with the space we have. Working here means you get to know the neighbors pretty well. Most of us have been around this part of town for a long time. The commute can be a pain depending on the trains, but once you’re inside, it’s just about getting the day started. We don't have any big speeches to give. It’s just a school in an old building where children come to learn their ABCs. Sometimes the fan makes a clicking noise, and we just live with it. It’s just a normal, busy day every day. We try to keep things simple for the kids and for ourselves too. There is always someone cleaning up a spilled drink.
