Sweet Bengal

Sweet Bengal is located in Mahim on Vasna Road 8. Every morning starts the same way here. We arrive early when the air is still a bit cool to start arranging the trays. There’s a lot of milk and sugar involved in what we do. The kitchen in the back is where most of the work happens, with big pots bubbling on the stoves. By the time we open the doors, the counters are full of different shapes and colors of sweets. We have to be careful when we are boxing things up so nothing gets squashed. It’s a bit of an art to fit everything perfectly into those cardboard boxes. The floor is tiled and we spend a lot of time scrubbing it because sugar makes everything sticky very fast. We get a lot of families coming in, especially on the weekends. They usually take their time deciding what they want. Sometimes kids press their hands against the glass cases, leaving little smudge marks we have to wipe off later. It's a busy little place. We don't really have a lot of space for people to sit, so most customers just buy their stuff and head out. We’ve been at this for a while now, and the routine hasn’t changed much over the years. It’s just how it is. We keep the counters clean and the boxes ready for the next customer.
