Steel Mart India Pvt Ltd has its home on the ground floor of the C-wing in Matulya, right on Tulsi Pipe Road. Lower Parel has changed a lot over the years, with all the big towers coming up, but this spot still feels like the old Mumbai in some ways. We deal with steel, so being on the ground floor is a necessity. It makes it much easier to move the heavy stock in and out without worrying about elevators or stairs. The ceilings are high, which is nice because it doesn't feel cramped even when we have a lot of inventory sitting around. The noise from the trains and the traffic on Tulsi Pipe Road is something you just get used to after a few days. We have a small office section partitioned off from the main storage area. It's nothing fancy, just some metal desks and chairs that have been around for a long time. We don't really go in for fancy decor or marketing talk. Most of our regulars know exactly where to find us. We start our day early before the traffic gets too bad. It is a lot of physical work, checking the metal and making sure the counts are right. We don't have a big HR department or anything corporate. We just work together, solve whatever problems come up that day, and lock up in the evening. It’s a solid way to make a living.
