Shoemaker Mumbai

Shoemaker Mumbai is right near the Hindustan Petrol Pump at Number 2-H. We’re close to Rohini Housing in Mahim. It’s a very busy area with all the cars coming and going for gas. The shop is small and can get pretty hot in the summer. We have a big window so we can see the street. I like to watch the traffic when it’s slow. We’ve got all kinds of shoes squeezed into this space. It's not a luxury boutique. It’s a place where you get shoes for walking or work. The floor is cement and we have some old rugs down. We don't spend much on decorating. Most of our effort goes into just keeping the stock updated. Mahim is a great place to be because there's always someone passing by. Sometimes the smell of petrol from the pump drifts in, but you get used to it. We have a little radio that plays in the background. My partner and I have been running this since the late nineties. We’ve seen the neighborhood change a lot. The buildings are taller now. We just keep doing what we do. We aren't trying to be the biggest shop in Mumbai. We just want to be the one that people in Mahim think of when they need a new pair of sandals. It’s simple, really. We open at ten and close when the street gets quiet.
