Kalbadevi is a frantic place to work, but it’s where all the action is for silk and fabric. We are Sadalene Silk Mills Private Limited and we are on the second floor of Shanti Bhavan, which is on Dhirubhai Parekh Marg. It’s a bit of a climb up the stairs, especially when we’re carrying rolls of material. Ladwadi is always packed with people and handcarts moving back and forth. Our office is on Plot 45/47. It’s a small space, filled mostly with old ledger books and fabric swatches. We’ve been here in Mumbai 400002 for a long time. You can hear the noise from the street all day long, but you get used to it after a week. We don't have any big signs or fancy lighting. It’s just an old-school office where we manage the mill's business. Everyone in the building knows everyone else. We share news over the balcony sometimes while having a quick tea. The fans hum all day to keep the humidity away from the silk samples we keep in the back. It’s not a corporate environment at all. We sit at wooden desks and deal with customers who have been coming to this area for decades. It’s about getting the work done and making sure the accounts match up. Sometimes the mail gets mixed up because there are so many offices here, but we sort it out eventually. We just keep things moving as best as we can.
