You can find us on the first floor of Tara House on Dr Veigas Street. That is in Kalbadevi, right in the thick of Mumbai’s biggest markets. Paharia Tex-Fab is the name on our small wooden door. The stairs leading up to our office are narrow and a bit dark. Down on the street, it is always chaos with people and handcarts moving huge bundles of fabric. This area is the heart of the textile trade in the city. We deal with all kinds of cloth, mostly stuff used for making garments. Our office is usually overflowing with bolts of cotton and polyester. There is always a bit of lint floating in the air. We spend our days matching color swatches and feeling the weight of different materials. It is a very loud neighborhood, but you get used to the noise after a few weeks. We don't have fancy office furniture or glass partitions. It is just heavy wooden tables and steel racks. We have been operating out of Plot-196A for many years now. We know all the other business owners on this block. We often drink tea from the local stall while we discuss orders with our customers. It is a very practical, no-nonsense way of doing business. We don't spend any money on big advertisements. People know where we are. When the festival season arrives, it gets very busy, and we stay late every night. We just keep working until the job is done.
