Modern Sweets & Farshan Mart

Kandivali West is home for us. Modern Sweets & Farshan Mart is located on Hamam Street, right at number 3. It’s an old street with a lot of history. You can feel it in the pavement. We open up the shutters early in the morning. That sound always wakes up the birds. Inside, it smells like sugar and oil. Most of the day is spent behind the counter. We arrange the farshan in the glass bins. It has to look decent, even if we aren't fancy. The sweets take a lot of time to get right. My cousin helps out with the heavy lifting. We don’t use any big machines, just our hands mostly. Hamam Street 3 is a good spot. People know us here. We aren't trying to be the biggest place in Kandivali West. We just want to be Modern Sweets & Farshan Mart. Simple as that. Sometimes the rain leaks a little near the back door, so we put a bucket there. It’s an old building, but it’s ours. We chat with the people who come in about the news or the weather. Nothing too serious. When the sun goes down, we start cleaning up the crumbs. There are always crumbs. We lock up and walk home. It’s a routine that works for us. We don't need much else besides the shop and the neighborhood. Every day is the same, but that is fine with us because we like the rhythm and the people who stop by for a chat.
