Our sweet shop, Kothari Sweets, is over in Mulund West, right at 1st Cross in the Anjaneya Block, house number 65. It’s a bit of a walk from the main road but people find their way here. We do a lot of the cooking in the back room where the big vats are. It gets very hot back there with the milk boiling for hours to make the khoya. We mostly sell traditional stuff that people buy for their homes or for when they go visit relatives. The front of the shop has glass cases where we keep the trays. We spend a lot of time arranging the pieces so they look neat, even though they get messed up as soon as someone buys a half-kilo. It’s a small team of us, mostly family, and we’ve been at this location for a good while. Mornings are for making the fresh batches and the afternoons are usually spent packing boxes. During the holidays, things get really crazy and we hardly have time to sit down. We don't really bother with much advertising because the neighborhood knows where we are. The address is 65 Anjaneya Block, and you’ll usually see a few of us sitting out front when it’s quiet. It’s a lot of sugar and sticky counters, but that’s just how a sweet shop is. We try to keep things simple and just keep the trays full for whoever walks in. Sometimes we have to close up early if we run out of milk for the sweets.
