J. H Stainless

We’re down on the ground floor of the Ladak Building, right at 50/52 on 10th Khetwadi. Khetwadi is full of these small workshops and family businesses, and we’ve been part of it for a long time at J. H Stainless. We deal with stainless steel. It’s shiny when it’s brand new, but we spend a lot of time cutting it and moving it around, so our hands are usually a bit greasy or dusty by noon. The shop isn't fancy at all. We have the racks for the pipes and sheets, and a small wooden desk where we do all the billing and phone calls. You can hear the sound of metal being moved and cut all day long from the other shops in the lane. It’s a tight space, but we make it work for us. Most of our days are spent measuring things out and making sure the cuts are exactly what the customer asked for. We don’t have a website; people usually just walk in or call us because they’ve been coming here for years. My father used to know all the guys in the building next door. It’s that kind of neighborhood where everyone knows everyone. Sometimes we get a big order that takes up the whole floor space, and we have to step over things to get to the back. It gets very hot in the afternoons, but we have a couple of old fans going. It’s just us, some steel, and the noise of the 10th lane.
