Invitation Writers

You can find us over in Sion Koliwada. It is a neighborhood where everyone knows everyone else, and things feel a bit more traditional. At Invitation Writers, we spend our days dealing with paper and ink. It is a very specific kind of work, and it can be quite slow compared to the fast pace of the rest of Mumbai. We sit at our desks and focus on the small details of invitations for weddings or other big events. The shop is filled with different types of cardstock and envelopes stacked in the corners. We often have ink stains on our fingers, and the smell of the pens is something you just live with. The street outside is usually full of people and noise, but inside it is mostly quiet so we can concentrate on the spelling and the layout. We don’t have a big fancy sign out front, just a small one that lets people know we are here in Sion. Sometimes we get a big order and the whole family has to pitch in to get it done on time. It is a lot of repetitive work, but we are used to it by now. The lighting isn't the best, especially in the evenings, but we manage. We have been here in this part of Sion for a long time, just doing our thing with paper and pens for the local families. Our neighbor brings us tea around four o’clock every single afternoon.
