Gopal Sweet Mart

You can find Gopal Sweet Mart at shop number 5 in Nana Peth, Vile Parle East. We have been here for decades, and the shop has seen many changes in the neighborhood. My grandfather was the one who first opened the doors. The sign above the shop has faded over the years, but most people know who we are without looking at it. We make our sweets right in the back room. It is a bit cramped and the heat from the large stoves makes it quite warm, especially during the summer months. Every morning, we arrange the fresh laddoos, barfis, and pedas in the glass display cases. By the time evening rolls around, many of the trays are nearly empty. Vile Parle is a fast-moving place because of the station nearby. People are always in a rush to catch their trains. Some stop for a quick bag of jalebi or some salty snacks to take home. We don't use any fancy machines for our cooking. Everything is done by hand, the old way. We don't do elaborate gift wrapping with shiny ribbons either. We just use plain boxes and a bit of string. It is an honest way to make a living. The floor is made of old stone and we scrub it every night after we close. We stay open until ten because that is when the last crowd of commuters walks past.
