If you go down Sonapur Lane in Bhandup West, you’ll find us at No. 8 Rahim Chawl. The place is called Eagle Furnitures. It’s a small shop in a very busy part of the neighborhood. The lane is quite narrow, so if two people are carrying a wardrobe out, everyone else has to wait. There’s always sawdust on the floor and the sound of hammers or saws going from early morning until late evening. We don't have a fancy showroom with bright lights and air conditioning. Our furniture is usually stacked up against the walls or sitting out on the sidewalk if we are finishing a polish job. It’s a humble setup, but it’s where we spend most of our lives. My hands are usually covered in wood glue or stain by the end of the day. We get a lot of local folks who walk in just to see what we are making or to ask for a small repair on a chair they’ve had for twenty years. It’s a tight-knit community in the chawl, so there’s always someone stopping by for a chat or a cup of tea. We just keep working away, making beds and cupboards as best as we can with the space we have. It’s noisy and dusty, but it’s home for the business and we wouldn't know what to do with ourselves if we weren't here in Bhandup making things for people's houses.
