Amar Sweet Mart

Our shop is at Shop No 10 in Bhalerao Bhavan on Annaswamy Mudaliar Road. It’s right near the Cotton Exchange. Amar Sweet Mart has been around for quite a long time. Everything is very sweet here, as you can imagine. We spend hours stirring big pots of milk and sugar. It’s a lot of arm work. Our trays are very heavy when they are full. We keep them behind the glass counters. The glass gets finger marks on it all day from people pointing at what they want. We have to wipe it down constantly. The floor is made of stone and it stays cool, which is nice. We get a lot of people during the festival times. It gets really crazy then. We almost can't keep up. The rest of the time it’s just a steady stream of folks. Some buy just one piece, others take boxes. We wrap everything in paper and tie it with string. It’s the old way of doing things. We don't have a computer. We do all the math in our heads or on a small notepad. Sometimes we make a mistake and have to start over. It’s just us and the sugar. We like the smell of cardamom that sticks to our clothes. It’s a good life in this part of town. We have a small shelf where we keep our tea mugs. They are all different colors.
