Uttam Ceramic is a straightforward operation right on the 8-a National Highway. We don't have a fancy entrance or a big sign with lights. Most people just know where we are because we've been on this stretch of road for a long time. The highway is always noisy, with horns honking and engines revving at all hours. Inside the gates, it’s a different kind of noise. It’s the sound of clay and heat. We spend our days making sure the ceramic pieces are coming out right. It’s a process that takes patience. If you rush it, things break. We have a small crew and most of us have been here since the start. We eat our lunch together in the shade when we can find it. The office is just a small room with a desk and a few chairs for visitors. We don't spend much time in there anyway. Most of the work happens out on the floor. We deal with suppliers and drivers all day long. Sometimes the shipments are late and we have to adjust our schedule. That is just how the ceramic business works. We keep our tools clean and our heads down. It’s a basic life, but it suits us. We are just one of many small shops along this highway doing the same thing day after day and getting the work finished before nightfall.
