Chamunda Rice Mills

Life at the mill in Village Gumti Kalan is mostly about timing. We are situated right on Mirza Road, near Dayal Pura, and it is a spot where you see a lot of traffic passing by. Chamunda Rice Mills has been part of this landscape for some time now. When the harvest season hits, the whole place changes pace. It gets loud and there is a constant hum from the equipment that you can hear even from the road. We spend a lot of time checking the moisture in the rice and making sure the hulling is done right. It is heavy work, moving bags around and making sure the storage areas stay dry when it rains. The roof leaks a tiny bit in the far corner, but we just move the stuff out of the way when the clouds look gray. Our team is just a bunch of local men who know how to handle the machinery. There are no suits or fancy meetings here. We usually sit outside during the lunch break if the weather is okay. Sometimes the dust gets thick in the air, so we wear cloths over our faces. It is just the way it goes with rice milling. We don’t try to be anything we aren’t. We just run the mill and try to stay on top of the orders that come in from the nearby towns.
