Our group is located in Khalore, which is in the Bagnan area of Howrah. Benapurbagnan Farmer Producer Company Limited is based at Asit Pore’s place. Howrah is known for a lot of things, but around here, it’s all about the fields. We grow flowers and vegetables that go to the big markets in Kolkata. Since we are close to the city, things move fast, but the work is still hard. We started this company to help our local farmers get a better grip on things. Sometimes the market prices change five times in a day. It’s hard to keep up when you’re out in the field. We try to share information so nobody gets cheated. We meet up at Asit’s place and look at the books. None of us really likes the paperwork, but it’s part of the deal now. We are just regular people. Some of us have been farming for forty years, others are younger. We have a lot of conversations about which fertilizers are ruining the soil and which ones actually work. It’s a learning process for all of us. We don't have a big mission statement or anything like that. We just want to make a living and keep our land healthy. Being a producer company helps us get better seeds and maybe a better price at the end of the day. It’s just honest work in a busy part of West Bengal. We try to stick together and get through the season.
