We have a few rooms filled with desks and a lot of computer towers that hum all day long. It gets pretty loud when everyone is talking at once, especially when we’re trying to figure out a tricky structural problem. There are stacks of catalogs for tiles and bathroom fixtures leaning against the walls because we ran out of shelf space a long time ago. The floor is that grey linoleum that shows every footprint, so it never looks quite clean no matter how much it's swept. We have a small kitchen area in the back where the fridge makes a strange rattling noise every twenty minutes. It’s a busy place, and there’s always someone running out to a site or coming back with mud on their shoes. We don’t spend much time making the place look perfect because there’s always another drawing to finish or a permit to check on. Sometimes the electricity cuts out and we all just sit there in the dark for a minute before getting the backup generator going. It’s just the way things go in this part of town. We’ve got a big clock on the wall that’s always five minutes fast, but nobody ever bothers to fix it. We just work around the little things and keep moving through the pile of work on our desks.
