Kitty Food Products

Down at Khud Mohalla Karabara Road 542/5, things stay pretty busy. Kitty Food Products isn't a huge operation. It’s mostly just us handling the daily tasks. The building is older and has that character you only get with time. We spend a lot of hours in the back area. The air usually smells like whatever we are processing that day. Sometimes it’s sweet, sometimes it’s savory. The floors are concrete and hard on the feet, so I wear thick shoes. We have a few delivery bikes that park right outside the door. The street, Karabara Road, is narrow and gets congested. You have to be careful when you’re loading boxes so you don’t get hit by a passing rickshaw. We keep the paperwork on a cluttered desk in the corner. There are stacks of receipts held down by an old heavy stone. At 542/5, everyone knows everyone. Neighbors pop their heads in to say hello while we are working. We don’t have fancy uniforms, just comfortable clothes that we don't mind getting a bit dirty. The lighting is functional, nothing more. We focus on getting the bags sealed and the crates filled. By the end of the shift, we are usually tired. We pull the metal shutters down and the sound echoes through the mohalla. It’s a good kind of tired though. Another day finished. We just show up and do the work the best we can every morning.
