Out here in Mopta Asambiya, the landscape is mostly flat and dry. It’s a long way from the main towns, and you really feel the space. Mandavi is known for its coast, but where we are in Kutch, it’s all about the industrial scale. The dust from the road covers everything within an hour of cleaning. We’ve got a massive area to cover, and most of the day is spent outdoors or in the big sheds. The sun is brutal in the afternoon, so we try to get the heavy loading done early. It’s a tough environment for the equipment, but we keep it all running. There isn't much around us except for a few other sites and the open horizon. We rely on each other quite a bit because it’s so remote. If something breaks, we usually have to figure out how to fix it ourselves. The guys live nearby or in the staff quarters, so it’s a tight-knit group. We talk about the weather and the latest shipments over lunch. It’s not a glamorous job, but the work we do here is the backbone of the bigger projects. You see the pipes heading out on the trailers and know they’re going across the country. It’s satisfying in its own way to see the yard empty out and then fill up again. By evening, the wind dies down and it finally cools off enough to relax.
