Down in Adipur, Indian Steel Corporation Ltd has a spot at Plot No-714 on the Dc-5 road. Gandhidham is a busy place for industrial work, and our corner of Kutch is no different. The plot is fairly large because steel takes up a lot of room. There is always a layer of fine dust on everything, no matter how much you clean it. The trucks come in through the main gate and it can get quite loud when they are unloading the heavy beams. We have a small cabin for the staff where we keep the records. It is usually quite warm inside, even with the windows open. We’ve been at this location for a good while and the people in the neighboring plots are all in similar trades. You get used to the sound of metal hitting metal throughout the day. Lunch is usually brought from home and eaten quickly before the next delivery arrives. Kutch is a dry place and the wind can really pick up in the evenings. We spend most of our time checking the inventory and making sure the loading is done safely. Nobody wears suits here; it’s mostly just practical clothes that you don’t mind getting grease on. It is a simple operation with a focus on just getting the material where it needs to go without any unnecessary delays or complications. The gate is a bit rusty and needs a good push to close properly. We usually leave it open during the day though. It’s a quiet life in a loud business.
