Ashok Hair Dresser is right near Kota Junction on Mala Road. If you know the area, you know how loud the train whistles can get throughout the day. We’ve been sitting in this same spot for years, watching people rush to catch their trains while we work on whoever is sitting in the chair. It’s a small shop with a few big mirrors that have some chips around the edges. We keep the combs in blue liquid jars and have a stack of old newspapers for people to read while they wait. The floor is made of that old checkered tile, and it’s seen a lot of foot traffic. Usually, it’s just me and my assistant working the scissors and razors. We get a mix of regulars who live on Mala Road and travelers who realized they needed a shave before their journey. The morning sun hits the front window pretty hard, so we have a faded curtain we pull halfway across. It’s not a place where you’ll find fancy coffee or magazines from this year. We just give a standard haircut and maybe some conversation about the local news or the weather. When the evening rush starts, the shop gets a bit hot and we have to turn on all the fans. It’s a steady kind of life, and we like being right here where all the action is near the junction.
