Vishwavikasa Farmer Producer Company Limited is based at house number 269 in Somanal, which is part of Karatagi. This area is famous for its fields, and most of us here have been farming as long as we can remember. We set up this company because we wanted to have a better say in how our produce is sold. In Karatagi, the paddy fields are everywhere you look. It is beautiful but it is also a lot of back-breaking work. Our office in Somanal is just a small room where we handle the basics. We don’t have a fancy website or a marketing department. We just have our hands and the land. A group of us decided that instead of selling to the first person who comes along, we should try to work together as a producer company. It helps us feel a bit more secure. Sometimes we sit around and talk about the water levels or the cost of labor. It’s a lot of small talk that matters a lot to our livelihoods. We are just regular people from Somanal trying to make the farm life work in these changing times. It isn't always easy to manage the company side of things, but we are learning as we go. We don't pretend to be anything we aren't. We are just farmers who joined up to have a better chance at surviving the year.
