This Sony service centre is situated out in the village of Mirhati, in the North 24 Parganas district near Kolkata. Being in a village area, it’s a bit different from the service centres you might find in the middle of the city. We are in a simple building that serves as both an office and a workshop. Most of our day is spent looking at broken television screens, audio systems, and cameras. There are workbenches covered in specialized tools, soldering irons, and small screws that you have to be careful not to lose. It can get quite dusty because of the unpaved roads nearby, so we are always wiping down the equipment. People travel from the surrounding villages and even from the edges of Kolkata to bring their electronics to us. We have a small area with a few chairs for customers to sit while we check their items and write out a receipt. It’s not a shiny showroom with bright lights. It’s a place of work where things get fixed. The power sometimes fluctuates, so we have stabilizers for all the important gear. Outside, you can hear the birds and the general sounds of village life, which is a bit more peaceful than the city. We just focus on getting the repairs done right and getting them back to the owners as soon as possible.
