Vedika Trading Company

Our office is in the Bangur Building on Rabindra Sarani. It’s an old building, the kind with thick walls and high ceilings, located right at number 114. Vedika Trading Company is up on the first floor in Room 18. If you’ve ever walked down Rabindra Sarani, you know how packed the streets are with handcarts, rickshaws, and people everywhere. The stairs up to our floor are a bit narrow and worn down from years of use. Inside, it’s a typical trading office. We have wooden desks that have been around for decades and shelves filled with old ledgers and files. The window looks out onto the street, so there’s a constant hum of traffic and shouting from the market below. It can be quite a climb when the humidity is high in Kolkata, but we’re used to it. We spend our days mostly on the telephone or dealing with the people who come up to the first floor to see us. It’s not a modern place with glass partitions. It feels more like a home that turned into an office a long time ago. We just keep the files moving and make sure the accounts are written up. It’s a slow and steady kind of life here in the heart of the city, just doing our bit day after day. When it’s time to close, we just lock the heavy door and head out into the crowd.
