Universal Machine Tools Mfg Co is tucked away in Block 'N' of New Alipore. We’ve been at 542 for years, and the neighborhood has changed a lot since we first opened the doors. It used to be much quieter, but now there’s always something going on nearby. We make tools and machinery, which is pretty straightforward work if you know what you’re doing. Most of the guys here have been with us for a long time, so they know the machines better than they know their own cars. We aren't interested in being the biggest company in the city. We just like making things that work. If you walk into our shop, it smells like metal and old grease. That’s a good smell to us. We don't spend money on fancy signs or expensive furniture for the office. Most of our furniture is just old desks we’ve had since the start. Sometimes the power goes out or the rain makes things difficult, but we manage. New Alipore is a decent place to be based, even if the parking is a nightmare. We just focus on the manufacturing side of things and leave the fancy talking to other people. It’s a small operation here, but we stay busy enough. There’s always another order to fill or a machine that needs a bit of tweaking. We just take it one day at a time and do our best.
