United Services & Stores

Being located at 67 B, on the 1st floor on Netaji Subhas Rd, we get a lot of the noise from the Calcutta GPO area. United Services & Stores isn't a very large operation, but we stay quite busy with the daily flow of things. The building is one of those older ones where you can feel the history in the damp walls and the narrow staircases. We are just one floor up, which is nice because we don't have to climb too far, but we still get a good view of the street life below. It’s a constant stream of people heading to the post office or the nearby offices. Inside our space, it’s mostly shelves and counters piled with whatever we are stocking that week. We don't really have a fancy showroom or anything like that. It’s more of a functional place where we get the work done. The lights hum a little bit, and there is usually a stack of ledgers on the main desk that needs attention. We take our tea breaks when things slow down for a minute, usually watching the traffic crawl by outside. It’s a bit of a grind sometimes, especially when the monsoon rain starts leaking in near the window, but we’ve managed here for a long time. It feels like home, even with the dust and the old wooden floors that creak when you walk.
