Our shop, Shroffs Carpets, is over at 9B Chowringhee Place in Dharmatala. This is a very old part of the city, and the building we’re in has a lot of history. It’s not like the new malls you see popping up. It’s got high ceilings and those old-fashioned windows. Inside, it’s packed with carpets from floor to ceiling. Some of them have been here for a while, and others are new arrivals. We spend our time dusting them off and showing them to whoever walks in from the street. Dharmatala is always crowded and noisy, so our shop feels like a bit of a refuge from the outside. It’s a bit dim inside, but that’s just how these old buildings are. We don't use any fancy lighting. We just rely on what comes through the door. We aren't salespeople who give you a hard time. We just let people look around and help when they ask. It’s a slow-paced kind of business. We’ve seen many generations of customers come through these doors. We don't have a website or a big social media presence. We just rely on being in this same spot for years. It’s a bit dusty and the floor creaks, but it’s home to us. We just keep doing what we’ve always done. We aren't interested in becoming a big brand. We just like carpets and the people who buy them.
