Operating a glass shop on Brabourne Road is a challenge because the streets are so narrow and the area is always crowded. Janta Glass House is at 34A, and it has been there for as long as I can remember. We have sheets of glass stacked against almost every wall, so you have to be really careful how you walk through the shop. It is often a bit dark inside because we keep the shutters halfway down to keep the heat out during the afternoons. We do most of the cutting right here on the big wooden table in the middle of the room. You can hear the sound of the glass cutters clicking and snapping all day long. It is a messy job with all the tiny shards that end up on the floor, so we have to be careful with our shoes. People come in with measurements written on scrap paper or sometimes just drawn on their hands. We try to get the edges as smooth as possible so nobody gets a cut. My father started this place, and I just sort of took it over when he couldn't lift the heavy panes anymore. We don't have a website or any of that. People in the neighborhood just know we are here. Sometimes the traffic on Brabourne Road is so bad that the delivery trucks can't even get close. We end up carrying the glass by hand for blocks just to get it to the customer.
