Om Stone Co.

Our place is tucked away behind the Beliaghata Police Station, right on Hem Chandra Nashkar Road at No.2. If you walk past the station, you can usually hear us before you see us. There is always the sound of stone being moved or some cutting going on. It’s a heavy job, working at Om Stone Co. We deal with big slabs of marble and various kinds of granite that come in on trucks. The yard gets quite dusty, especially when the wind picks up, and by the end of the day, our clothes are usually covered in a fine white powder. We spend a lot of time moving things around to make space for new deliveries. It’s not a quiet office job, that’s for sure. We have samples lying around everywhere so people can see the patterns in the stone. Sometimes the pieces are so heavy it takes a few of us just to shift one block. People come here when they are building something new or fixing up a floor. We just show them what we have in the back. The tea man comes by twice a day and that’s when we actually take a break. Otherwise, it’s just the routine of checking the inventory and making sure the slabs are stored safely so they don’t crack. It is hard work but it’s what we know how to do here in Beliaghata.
