We are very close to the Kolkata Station in Ultadanga, so the area is always buzzing with people and taxis. It is a very busy part of the city to work in. Our space is filled with heavy slabs of marble and crates of tiles. It is a bit of a maze inside sometimes. We spend a lot of our time moving things around with the trolley and making sure nothing gets chipped. The noise from the station and the main avenue is constant, but you stop noticing it after a few weeks of working here. Our office is just a small wooden desk tucked into the corner of the warehouse. We don't have any air conditioning, just a couple of wall fans that struggle against the Kolkata humidity. Most of the people who come by are looking for something specific for their floors or bathrooms. We just show them what we have in the stacks. It is a lot of physical labor, and our clothes usually have some marble dust on them by noon. Sometimes the train whistles are so loud we have to pause our conversation for a second, but that is just part of being near the station. We have been in Ultadanga for quite a while now. We know the other shop owners on Nazrul Islam Avenue and we all just get through the day together.
