Kamakhya Marble

Our place is at Plot No. 255 on Rabindra Sarani, right in the heart of Bara Bazar. It’s a very crowded area, especially being so close to the old Moon Light Cinema. If you’ve ever been to this part of Kolkata, you know how loud and busy it gets with all the trucks and rickshaws. We deal in marble here. Big slabs, small tiles, all of it. The yard is usually full of stone that’s just arrived from the quarries. It is heavy work, and we spend a lot of time moving things around with the help of a few laborers. Water is always running over the saws to keep things cool while we cut the marble to the right size for someone's floor or kitchen. It gets slippery and loud, so we have to be careful. My father started this years ago, and I took over when my back couldn't handle the lifting as much anymore. Now I stay mostly in the small office area or talk to the contractors who come in. We don't have a shiny showroom with bright lights. You just come in, look at the stacks of stone, and pick what you like. We give you the price, tell you when it can be delivered, and that’s it. It’s a simple business but it’s kept us going for a long time in this neighborhood. We know the stones well and can tell you which ones will last longer.
